On this date …

1973: The Clovis Board of Realtors named Clovis National Bank President Joe Sisler its Man of the Year for 1973. Roy Gentry was selected Realtor of the Year. U.S. Sen. Joseph Montoya was the group’s guest speaker.

1964: A Clovis woman walked into the city police department about 4 a.m. and said she had escaped from the jail in Fort Sumner. When De Baca County jailers checked, they discovered three inmates were missing. The woman said an unknown man had unlocked cell doors for all three prisoners and told them to leave or he would kill them. She hitchhiked to Clovis and turned herself in. The other escapees were still free.

1960: Curry County farmers voted to organize a county sugar beet association. Officers included Hoyt Pattison, Z. McCasland and Bob Spencer.

New tires and tubes …

1952: Max Meadors car dealership advertised a 1949 Buick in the classified ads. “Super 4-door sedan with 4 new tires and tubes. Good blue finish, standard transmission,” the ad read. Anyone interested needed to ask for used car No. 282. The phone number for Max Meadors was 4466. The address was 301 Pile St. in Clovis.

Paid in full …

1949: Pete Strickler, manager of Montgomery Ward in Clovis, received an unsigned letter from Bovina, along with two $1 bills. The letter read, “About 20 years ago I was in Wards store and walked out with a purse and a pair of hose. Am not sure but I think the purse was 50 cents, the hose less than one dollar. And now I am trying to get (right) with my God.”
