Police raise money to take kids shopping

Staff report

For many children in the community, having $100 to go holiday shopping is a luxury out of their reach.

That’s where the Clovis Police Department stepped in to help.

Officers stood in the cold on street corners selling doughnuts for donations, and teamed up with wait staff at a local restaurant for tips in order to raise money to take children shopping.

Now they will take 205 children shopping with $100 gift cards on Monday.

Amy Sellers Parker, the police chief’s administrative assistant, said she has started making phone calls to notify families of their selection. She said the department received 356 applications.

Parker said the children will be paired with members of law enforcement, representatives from Cannon Air Force Base, teachers and civilian staff.

According to the Cops and Kids Christmas public service announcement, parents need to pick up invitations by 4 p.m. today at the police department, and children must bring the invitations on the day of shopping.
