New Mexico fishing report — Jan. 29

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Eagle Rock Lake: Closed through next fall. The closure will allow Chevron Mining to dredge the lake and reconstruct the area.

Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing was good using small ice jigs tipped with Power Bait, worms and wax worms for perch. Fishing was fair using ice jigs, worms, salmon eggs and Power Bait for trout. We had no reports on other species. Snowmobiles and 4 wheel drive vehicles are now permitted on the ice but must enter at the boat ramp. Lake Alice: Closed to fishing due to thin ice. Contact the Sugarite State Park office at (575) 445-5607 for updated conditions.

Lake Maloya: Ice thickness as of this past Sunday was about 10 inches. Trout fishing was sporadic with some rainbows being caught by anglers using salmon eggs. Contact the State Park office at (575) 445-5607 for updated ice conditions.

Monastery Lake: Fishing was good using Power Bait, homemade dough bait and salmon eggs for trout.

Pecos River: Fishing in the Villanueva area was fair for using salmon eggs for trout.

Red River: Water flow near the hatchery on Monday was 17 cfs. Trout fishing was slow. Fishing pressure was very light.

Rio Grande: Stream flow on Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 470 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

Storrie Lake: There was no fishing this past week as thin ice covered the lake. For updated conditions, contact the State Park office at (505) 425-7278.

Ute Lake: There was very little fishing pressure on the lake and fishing was slow for all species.

Northwest

Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 243 cfs. Fishing was fair using salmon eggs, egg patterns, leeches and San Juan worms for trout.

Albuquerque Area Drains: Fishing on the Albuquerque Drain was good using egg patterns, wax worms, Gulp eggs and salmon eggs. We had no reports on other species or from other drains.

Bluewater Lake: Closed to fishing due to thin ice. For updated ice conditions contact the State Park office at (505) 876-2391

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 101 cfs and 53 cfs respectively. Fishing below Abiquiu was fair to good using wooly buggers, copper John Barrs and Power Bait for rainbow trout. We had no reports from below El Vado.

El Vado Lake: Contact the State Park office at (575) 588-7247 for updated conditions.

Fenton Lake: A layer of ice has formed on the lake and it is closed to ice fishing. Put this one back on your list for great fishing early next spring.

Heron Lake: A good portion of the lake was covered in unsafe ice this past weekend and that included the boat ramp area. We had no reports from anglers. For updated conditions, contact the State Park office at (575) 588-7470.

Jemez Waters: Fishing on the lower Jemez was fair using salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on other area waters.

Laguna Del Campo: Closed for the season.

Navajo Lake: Fishing was slow for all species but there were a few brown trout caught by an anglers trolling Rapalas. We also heard of one northern pike caught by an angler trolling for trout. We had no reports on other species.

San Gregorio Lake: We had no reports from anglers.

San Juan River: Water flow below Navajo Lake on Monday morning was 361 cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was very good using black and tan leeches, red larva, grey and chocolate johnny flash and egg patterns. Fishing through the bait waters was good using Gulp eggs, salmon eggs, leeches and San Juan worms. Plans are in the works to lower the flows to 250 cfs around Feb. 7 and maintain that level until Feb. 10 or 11.

Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Central Pond was very good using salmon eggs, Power Bait and a variety of flies and lures. Wayne Garcia and his son Joshua, age 12, were here last Monday and caught and released over 20 rainbows. Wayne was using Berkley Power worms while Joshua used a silver Super Duper, a baby shad Strike King crank bait, a brown Pistol Pete and Berkley Gulp minnows. Fishing at the Youth Pond was very good using salmon eggs, Power Bait and marshmallows. Fishing at the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond was good using leeches, egg patterns, small midge patterns and streamers.

Southwest

Bill Evans Lake: Trout fishing was good using Gulp eggs, Power Bait, homemade dough bait and salmon eggs. We had no reports on other species.

Caballo Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was light.

Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing for white bass was slow with just a few caught by angers using slab spoons. Fishing for largemouth bass was slow but there were a few caught by anglers using jigging spoon deep off main lake points. We had no reports on other species. Fishing pressure was light.

Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 120 cfs.

Glenwood Pond: Fishing was good using Power Bait and salmon eggs for trout.

Rio Grande: Stream flow below Elephant Butte on Monday morning was .35 cfs. Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs and Power Bait.

Young Pond: Trout fishing was very good using Power Bait, salmon eggs and cheese. We had no reports on other species.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs and Power Bait.

Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 16 cfs. Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs.

Bosque Redondo: Fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs, Power Bait, small spoons and bead-head wooly buggers for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Bottomless Lakes: Trout fishing was good using Super Dupers and yellow and rainbow Power Bait.

Brantley Lake: Fishing was slow but there were a few largemouth bass and white bass caught by anglers using crank baits and spoons. We had no reports on other species. Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: Fishing was fair using Power Bait, Gulp eggs and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Chaparral Park Lake: Fishing was good using salmon eggs for trout.

El Rito Creek: Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs.

Green Meadow Lake: Trout fishing was very good using Power Bait and salmon eggs.

Greene Acres Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Grindstone Reservoir: Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs and Power Bait.

Lake Van: Fishing was fair to good using homemade dough bait, salmon eggs and Power Bait

Oasis Park Lake: Fishing was very good using Power Bait, marshmallows and egg patterns for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner on Monday was 26 cfs. Fishing below Sumner was fair to good using salmon egg, Power Bait and Gulp eggs for trout.

Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was .02 cfs.

Sumner Lake: There were no anglers on the lake this past week.
