With the stakes higher, the Dora Coyotes topped Fort Sumner again.
The host Coyotes hit 10 3-pointers, and Dalton Privett scored 33 in just three quarters as
Dora got a 72-58 win to open the District 6-2A tournament.
With Dora ahead 17-10 after the first quarter, the Foxes went on a 7-3 run to begin the second to cut the deficit to three points, but Privett hit 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to give Dora breathing room.
Privett scored Dora’s first 13 points of the second before Jesus Villegas hit a three from the wing with just over a minute left in the frame, and the Coyotes were able to build a 36-26 lead going into the half.
“The first time we played them we only won by two,” said Coyotes coach Kevin Lackey. “This time the difference was we hit shots that we didn’t make the last time. That opened things up for us against their zone.”
In the third quarter Privett continued his hot start, scoring nine in the third, all inside the paint, while Arzate and Jasso added each added a three. Jasso scored 12 points, all on 3-pointers.
The Coyotes will travel to Logan Thursday in the district semifinals.
“We were able to get some key buckets when they cut into the lead,” Lackey said. “We got a lot of seniors and juniors who have been in that position before, so they were able to figure it out and find a way to get some points.”
Garrett Hisel scored 27 to lead the Foxes.
Dora 42, Fort Sumner 31
The Lady Coyotes were up three points entering the fourth quarter, but a quick 5-0 run and some late free throws got them a 42-31 win to advance in the girls District 6-2A tournament.
Brittany Kenmore hit a three from the wing and Taylor Dillard added a layup off a steal to keep the Lady Coyotes out in front. Fort Sumner whittled the lead to three, but the Lady Coyotes went 8-of-19 from the line in the fourth.
“We got off to a slow start,” said Lady Coyotes coach Gabe Montoya. “We were lucky there at the end to get some shots that fell and to hit enough free throws.
Dillard scored a game-high 13 and Kaly Cone added 11, including three treys.
Dora will travel to Melrose today in the district semifinals.
