A Tax Ratification Election in Farwell may not be too far off in the future after a town hall meeting Monday night.
“It wasn't anything official,” said Farwell Schools Superintendent Kelly Lusk. “The community said, 'Yeah, we should pursue another TRE.'”
The TRE, Lusk said, would bring in more local tax revenue to help schools pay for utility bills, maintenance and daily operations. The state also provides schools 70 percent of what is locally collected.
“This helps pay the bills, to put it bluntly,” Lusk said.
Before the TRE can be officially implemented, Lusk said the school board must decide whether or not to have an election. They will consider it at the next school board meeting in May. If they decide to move forward with the election at the meeting, Lusk said the tax ratification would happen in September.
“It's very important for the town of Farwell and the community to get informed and come out and vote,” Lusk said. “Whatever the community decides, we'll do, but I think people need to exercise their civil right to vote. It's really important to the school and obviously what's important to the school is important to the town. Everyone has some connection to it.”
