Information on relieving pain, substitutes for night shades and how to make a mug rug will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and noon Thursday.
Dr. Daniel Marez is a doctor of Oriental medicine in Raton, and he has written a book on relieving pain. He’s going to share his journey from being a licensed optician to becoming a healer and acupuncturist.
Nightshades are a category of vegetables, and Carol Fenster, a nutritionist and author, will demonstrate some substitutes for potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant and others that many people cannot eat because they contain an alkaloid that may promote joint inflammation.
Clare Rowley is going to demonstrate using leather and home décor fabrics to make a mug rug, which is a coffee cup coaster. She’ll feature the Pearls ‘n Piping Foot as well as the Satinedge presser foot to do this technique. She’s from Prescott Valley, Arizona.
Information on making a multiple compartment wallet, embellishing a wardrobe, and making a tulip lampshade will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” at noon Tuesday and at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Sewing expert and author Patsy Shields will show a technique for making a unique wallet sewn with four separate compartments for the world traveler or the coupon clipper — and it uses a basic utility stitch, beautiful fabrics and multiple zippers.
Sewing expert Barbara Crawford will show a way to create a whole new wardrobe using the old one in the closet as the base and going beyond embellishing to update the pieces.
Mary Maxwell, artist and designer, will demonstrate how to make a tulip lampshade with beautiful silk rosettes for accent. She’ll also explain how to dye the fabric to get just the right color for your lamp.
Mashed (cauliflower) potatoes
• 4 cups chopped (1 1/2 pounds) white cauliflower
• 1 whole garlic clove
• 1/4 cup half-and-half or milk of choice
• 2 tablespoons butter or buttery spread, such as Earth Balance
• 2 tablespoons fat-free sour cream or sour cream alternative, such as Vegan Gourmet
• 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese or soy Parmesan, such as Galaxy
• 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
• Salt and freshly ground white (or black) pepper, to taste
In medium saucepan, steam cauliflower and garlic over boiling water until very tender, about 10 to 12 minutes. Drain cauliflower and garlic very thoroughly and pat cauliflower dry with paper towels. In food processor, immediately puree hot cauliflower and garlic with half-and-half, butter, sour cream, Parmesan, and onion powder until very, very smooth Add salt, pepper, and more Parmesan, if desired, and serve hot.
