Congratulations ...

To the Portales High girls basketball team for capturing the team camp championship at Eastern New Mexico University. Portales entered as the sixth seed, but rallied for three straight wins —including a 43-42 win over Class 6A Hobbs.

Royalty time ...

On Saturday, the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds will host a horsemanship and interview clinic for females ages 6-24 who want to compete for one of the county fair’s titles of fair queen, princess or sweetheart. The event goes from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the fairgrounds’ outdoor arena.

Going north ...

One of the agenda items on the Clovis school board meeting Tuesday is a travel request for the Clovis High School band. The band is requesting permission to travel Oct. 15-18 for the Colorado Bandmasters Association’s Harrison Marching Festival in Colorado Springs.

Band Director Bill Allred said it would be the band’s first trip to a CBA event.
