Tax board approves $44,000 in requests

The Lodger’s Tax Advisory Board approved $44,000 out of requests totaling $64,500 at their meeting Tuesday at City Hall.

Lodger’s tax funds are used to promote Clovis events that attract people from outside the city.

Legislative and Community Development Director Claire Burroughes said there is $220,000 in the lodger’s tax fund.

Recommendations included:

• $6,000 for the Clovis Community College 2015-2016 Cultural Arts Series.

• $1,500 for the Clovis Main Street Art Hop & Shop. Executive Director Lisa Pellegrino-Spear said the event will feature booth space for regional artists Sept. 12 on Main Street.

• $6,500 for the Desert Cruzers 19th annual Run to Hillcrest, presented by the Desert Cruzers Car Club. President Jerry Bailey said more than 250 cars are expected at the event.

• $2,000 for the Matt 25 Hope Center for their second annual UV Splash Color Dash 2015 5K run. Director Steve Reshetar said last year more than 350 people attended the event, and this years promotion would include Lubbock and Amarillo.

• A total of $13,000 for the Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce, including $3,500 for the 2016 Community Profile, $2,000 for the Norman & Vi Petty Rock & Roll Museum, $3,000 for promotional items and goody bags, $500 for promotional materials postage, and $4,000 for the Young Professionals of Clovis and Clovis Main Street “Rocktober Fest” beer and wine festival Oct. 17. The board tabled a request for a mobile application affiliated with the Clovis News Journal due to a lack of information.

• $10,000 for the promotion of 11 events hosted by the Clovis Softball Association.

• $3,000 for the American Legion Post 25 Riders for a ride for bullying awareness Aug. 23.

• $2,000 for the Clovis Youth Soccer Association.

All recommendations must receive final approval from the Clovis city commission.
