Editor's notebook — Sept. 29

Way to go: Congratulations are in order for author Gary Mitchell, singer Halle Reid and Cadet Derik Todd Kuykendall, all from Clovis.

• Mitchell learned over the weekend his collection of Amos the Churchmouse columns is a finalist for honors in the New Mexico-Arizona Book Awards for 2015.

Winners will be announced Nov. 20.

• Reid, a Texico High School student, is among three finalists in a contest to sing the National Anthem at the National Finals Rodeo in December in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The winner is determined by popular vote at http://www.nfrexperience.com.

• Kuykendall recently completed Cadet Basic Training at the U.S. Military Academy, according to a military news release.

Kuykendall entered West Point on June 29 and has successfully completed six weeks of CBT — one of the “most challenging events a cadet will encounter over the course of their four years at the academy,” the release said.

He plans to graduate from West Point in 2019 and be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
