Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Clovis figured with a break from District 4-6A competition Thursday, it would experiment to see if it could find a combination that could turn around its four-match skid.
So much for that.
Just as it had twice before this season, Roswell swept past Clovis Thursday with a 25-10, 25-9, 25-12 victory.
Clovis coach Gabe Apodaca figured the Lady Cats (5-11) lost nothing trying different things. But the sweep was evidence that it’s back to the drawing board again before Saturday’s 4-6A match at Alamogordo.
“They continue to play well, and we continue to struggle; both were amplified today,” Apodaca said of Roswell. “We’re looking for an opportunity to see if we can turn the page, start playing better. We’ve looked at different lineups, different personnel, we could not put it together.”
Makinzie Johnson led a struggling Clovis offense with four kills, while sophomore Lexi Cole had three blocks.
Roswell, which opens District 4-5A play Tuesday against Lovington, has lost four-set matches to St. Pius and Cleveland and beaten its other 12 opponents in sweeps.
Texico 3, Melrose 0 — In a matchup of state finalists in Classes 2A and 3A, respectively, defending 3A champ Texico survived the first set and held off the host Buffaloes for a 27-25, 25-21, 25-17 victory.
Jasmine Gannon had 24 kills and Brianna Reyna 16 for Texico (12-1), which moved its streak to nine matches since its loss to Class 6A Eldorado in the Moriarty Tournament semifinals.
Melrose (13-2), which had an 11-match win streak snapped, got 12 kills from Taylor Bostwick.
Grady 3, Des Moines 0 — Sage Starbuck had 12 kills and Jasmine Gonzales had 17 assists in the Bronchos’ 25-16, 25-17, 25-11 victory. Grady, which also got three aces from Starbuck, improved to 10-3 on the season.
Logan 3, Fort Sumner 0 — Fort Sumner dropped below .500 with the 25-16, 25-18, 25-11 loss.
Kippi Webb led the Lady Longhorns (13-3, 1-1) with 11 kills. Paris Allred had 12 kills and one block to lead the Vixens (7-8, 0-2).
