Eastern New Mexico University introduced their new greyhound logo last week with more color and definition added to the now trademarked symbol.

After deciding to trademark their mascot symbol earlier this year, the university had to slightly alter the image of their greyhound to make it less similar to the greyhound depicted on the Greyhound Bus Lines.

According to John Houser, director of marketing and communication services at ENMU, the college trademarked the logo through Learfield Licensing Partnership, and the new logo was redesigned in the communication services office by Lead Graphic Designer Scott Kendall.

The changes consisted of a slight change in the greyhound’s features as well as the addition of a green and white border around it’s body, according to Houser.

ENMU President Steven Gamble said previously that the university will receive close to $10,000 in royalties annually from the trademarked symbol.

Last spring, ENMU Board of Regent members also approved removing the Zia symbol from female athletics to be able to have a trademarked symbol for all of the university’s athletics. The Zia Sun symbol is owned under cultural property rights by the Zia Pueblo of New Mexico.

William Lampkins, graduate and current information technology services lab supervisor for the University Computer Center at ENMU, said he wasn’t aware until very recently that the logo had changed.

Lampkins said he had seen a survey from the college about a change in the Zia logo for the women’s sports teams but hadn’t heard anything about a change in the Greyhound logo.

Public reaction to the change has been mixed.

“I have not seen much reaction to it,” Houser said. “I do see it as more defined. It’s more distinct,” said Lampkins, adding that the greyhound was brought to the forefront with the colored border. “I feel that the new design is pretty good.”
