RIO RANCHO — Clovis High’s girls came up short in a close one with Cleveland on Friday night, losing to the Storm 42-39.
Sophomore guard Teya Morris put up a desperation three at the end of regulation that bounced off the rim.
Senior post Jade Hill led Cleveland (9-7) with 12 points and sophomore guard Elizabeth Davis added 10. Sophomore post Mimi Coleman scored a game-high 16 for the Lady Cats (6-9), while senior guard Serena Garcia added nine points and Morris finished with eight.
The most glaring difference was the free throw line, where Cleveland shot 13-of-18 and the Lady Cats finished 7-of-19. Clovis coach Jeff Reed said the Lady Cats also converted just 11-of-40 shots in the paint.
“We had tons of chances,” Reed said. “We just didn’t take advantage of it, and you’ve got to take advantage of it on the road.”
The Lady Cats trailed early, rallied for an 18-17 halftime lead and led by six in the third quarter before the Storm rallied to tie it 28-28 after three.
CHS will play three games at home next week, beginning on Tuesday against Portales.
