Borden: Cooking with figs on upcoming show

Information on making kids’ costumes, preparing snack bars and power bars, and using specialty stamps to make a quilt will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” on Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. and on Thursday at noon. (All times are Mountain.)

If you like to make Halloween costumes or play clothes for your kids, you’ll really enjoy the project Carina Gardner will demonstrate which results in an octopus costume. She is the Creative Director and Designer for Carina Gardner, Inc. and Carta Bella Paper Company. She lives in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Creative Living

Chef John Csukor is a culinary consultant to the California Fig Advisory Board, and he’s going to demonstrate how easy it is to cook with figs and prepare simple, on the go snack bars and power bars that are packed with flavor and sustainable energy. Csukor owns Kor Food Innovation in Ashland, Virginia.

Designer and crafter, Ann Butler will show how to use specialty stamps to stamp out a real quilt. The stamps are created without a lip so you can easily place them next to each other to create awesome art, mixed media pieces, backgrounds and more. Her company is Ann Butler Designs in Villard, Minnesota.

Information on doing “shadow appliqué,” using a special paint for paper to make elegant cards, and creating a wall finish in a child’s room will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” on Tuesday at noon and on Saturday at 2 p.m. (All times are Mountain).

Sewing expert, Vivian Lavinskas will demonstrate “shadow appliqué.” She’ll show how to prepare the fabric and the hoop, stitch the appliqué and then show how to cut the design out and make a pillow top. She is with Singer Sewing Co. in LaVergne, Tennessee.

Chris Thornton, a designer with Delta Technical Coatings, Inc. in Whittier, California. Thornton will show how to make some elegant cards using a special paint for paper and a product called Paper Plus.

Barbara Wurden is a creative artist who will show how to do a technique called “high five to hands” to create a clever finish on a wall for a child’s room. Her company is called Faux Fun, and she lives in Long Beach, California.

Stuffed Figs with Yogurt and Grand Marnier

• 1/2 cup Greek yogurt

• 2 tablespoons orange zest

• 1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme, leaves only

• 1 tablespoon Grand Marnier liqueur

• 12 large dried California Calimyrna figs

• 1 tablespoon finely chopped salted almonds

• 24 small mint leaves; for garnish

Mix yogurt, orange zest, chopped thyme, and liqueur together until smooth; set aside. Remove stems and cut figs in half lengthwise. Divide and spoon scant tablespoons of yogurt mixture onto cut side of each fig half. Sprinkle with chopped almonds and garnish with mint sprigs. Arrange on platter or individual serving plates. Store in refrigerator until ready to serve. Serve cold or at room temperature. Yields: 24 appetizers.
