Valley hands Lady Cats 6-1 setback

Staff report

RIO RANCHO — Valley put together three two-run innings, taking advantage of four Clovis High errors, en route to a 6-2 victory over the Lady Wildcats in Thursday’s first round of a softball tournament hosted by Cleveland H.S.

The Vikings (7-3) scored twice in the second inning and added two each in the fourth and fifth. Senior Desiree Perea earned the win in the circle, allowing the Lady Cats (3-3) just three singles.

Valley had six hits, but the errors helped the Vikings get control of the game.

“If we get back to making routine plays, we can get back to playing good softball,” CHS coach Freddy Perez said. “We’ve had some pretty good defensive days this year, but this wasn’t one of them.”

The Lady Cats broke up Perea’s shutout bid in the sixth inning, scoring when Brianna Montano walked and eventually scored on a single by sophomore pitcher Celeste Chavez.

Chavez also went the distance in the circle for Clovis.

Sophomore Marissa Martinez led the way for Valley with a pair of hits, driving in one run and scoring two.

The Lady Cats play twice today, starting with a 9 a.m. matchup against Rio Rancho.
