Curry County Republican Women

CCRW met April 12 at the Dakota Steakhouse.

Members discussed having a voters drive to register new voters. Also discussed was the need to start thinking about the Republican county fair booth which is worked by members of Republican Women. Another topic of discussion was to possibly have a drawing each meeting for a free lunch.

Curry County Commission District 4 candidates Benjamin Smith and Steven Gershon discussed their qualifications and experience. Important topics were financial stability and preservation of local businesses.

Curry County Commission District 5 candidate Robert Thornton discussed skills he could bring to the commission. He stated he is knowledgeable in areas of conservation and the water issues.

Next meeting will be at Dakota Steakhouse on May 10.

Peanut Valley Toastmasters

Member Michael Wilcox delivered a prepared inspirational speech, "Cook Your Own Food," completing his requirements for the Competent Communicator award. Bailey Decker won best speaker for her second prepared speech, "It's All About You," with the objective of developing organization. New member Marquis Glick was topics master for the meeting. Member Veronica Ayala won best table topics and best evaluator. Meetings are held every Thursday at 7 p.m. in the KENW Broadcast Center and guests are always welcome.

Portales Woman’s Club

Portales Woman’s Club met on April 13 with President, June Ferguson presiding. Jan Smartnick gave the invocation and Mary Lou Rowley led the pledges and Collect. There were 14 members and six guests present.

Mayor Sharon King presented a proclamation to the club for their pinwheel garden in support of preventing child abuse.

Sheryl Borden, nominating committee chair, presented the slate of officers for 2016-2017: President Cami Howl, First and Second Vice Presidents Amber Hamilton and Lori Dunn, Third Vice President Gertie Swager, Recording Secretary Beth Banda, Corresponding Secretary Mary Lou Rowley and Treasurer Danielle Swopes. These officers were approved unanimously.

Members voted to move forward on having the club building repaired and a committee will make plans with the contractor soon.

The final meeting of this club year will be on May 11 at 8:30 a.m., and it will be the installation of new officers.
