Hartsfield: Give gift-givers helpful hints

Mother’s Day is in two weeks, so there’s still plenty of time to drop those hints to your significant other, family member or friend of what to gift you.

As the kids get older, the gift ideas can get less and less creative. But for the mom who appreciates fashion, your gift-givers can’t go wrong as long as you steer them in the right direction.

No matter what your sense of style is, trust me, it is a struggle for people to shop for you. There’s always the fear of not getting it right. Good news is, it’s OK for you to be straight-forward about what you want.

For instance, you’re in a department store with your husband and you spot a pair of shoes that you really like. You say the pumps will go really great with the dress you want to wear to church next Sunday. Follow up that they’ll make a great Mother’s Day gift while you’re trying them on. Smile and put them away.

Trying on clothes and posing is the best because they get to see what you like that you don’t already have. But you have to have a conversation about it to make sure they’re paying attention. The bonus is they’ll know exactly where to go.

Compliment another woman’s style in front of your person as a conversation starter of how you’d love to have a handbag similar to the one she was carrying, just in time for your summer trip. Or, tell your gift-giver how much you love the summer hat you just saw an actress wearing on your favorite TV show.

You can drop hints too if you’re not comfortable with being so indiscreet. For example, if you like surprises, you can simply tell your family to visit your favorite website for gift ideas and hope they come close to picking something you love. Remind them of your favorite colors you like to wear or that you prefer accessories over clothing. Whatever you get, you will smile and be happy.
