Nieka Style: It's your day, be fabulous

Last week I talked about how to get that fashionable gift you desire for Mother’s Day. It’s one week away and today is about what you’re going to wear. Every tribute, every holiday and every honor should be done in style. If you’re a mother, then what better way to accept the outpours of love and appreciation for the joyful yet demanding task of being mom? From the top of your head to the bottom of your feet, here are my thoughts to help you shop your own closet for Mother’s Day.

• Hair. Your hair is your crown so you should always keep it nice and polished no matter what the texture or style. You don’t necessarily need to change your hair but getting a trim or touching up your color will refresh you and make you feel picture ready. If you’re not loving your hair lately, dare to try a something new like a fascinator for church or bedazzled head scarf or turban. Get creative.

• Nails. I normally opt for clear polish and a trim with a little length. I’m not a big fan of color outside special occasions. For Mother’s Day, do your own nails. But if you must treat yourself, try something different. For your manicure, try a new shape when filing or let your manicurist show off his or her talent and let them freehand you a style.

• Outfit. Again, shop your closet. Every occasion doesn’t require a trip to the store. You’d be surprised at all the great outfits you can put together with what you already have. If your Mother’s Day is low-key then think simple glam. Dazzle up a pair of jeans with a fancy top, accessories and bright lipstick. You can mix and match your formal wear with casual styles. This is also the time you get to wear that outfit you’ve been saving.

• Footwear. Pull out those shoes you bought just because they were cute but you have nowhere to wear them. Focus your entire outfit around your shoes or lay out all of your favorite things and build from that. Treat yourself. It’s your day.
