Current ENMU freshman and Clovis High graduate Shelby Jones will join the Greyhounds women’s basketball team for the 2016-17 season.

The 6-foot-1 Jones will probably play either power forward or center for the Hounds. She is also a member of the ENMU track team.

As a CHS student, Jones helped the Lady Wildcats win three district championships as well as the Class 5A state championship in 2013 when Clovis finished the season 30-2.

Shelby Jones, who helped Clovis win the 2013 Class 5A championship as a sophomore, will join ENMU’s women’s basketball team next season.

During her career at CHS, Jones led the team in rebounding and blocked shots. She earned second-team all-district honor as well as two first team all-district and a second team all-state honor.

“We are very excited that Shelby Jones has decided to play for Greyhound women's basketball,” ENMU coach Josh Prock said in a press release. “She is a very aggressive and strong post player. Shelby has the ability as well to step out and hit the outside shot and she will help us out tremendously in the areas of rebounding and toughness.

“Shelby Jones is a tremendous student and person and will represent our women’s basketball program very well.”

Jones originally committed to play basketball at Division I and former Lone Star Conference member Abilene Christian, but decided to take a break from basketball.

“I was tired of basketball,” she said. “I really just wanted to focus on track. But I’ve always liked coach Prock, so it’s just drawing me back to it.”

Jones said she knows she’s going to have to put in a lot of work in the offseason to be ready to run up and down the hardwood again.

“I think conditioning’s going to be a big issue,” she said. “It’s not like I’ve been sitting around on the couch. I’ve been staying in shape for track, but I’m not in full-on basketball shape. There’s a difference between being in shape and being in basketball shape.”

ENMU finished the 2015-16 season at 10-17, going 5-11 in the LSC and losing in the first round of the conference’s postseason tournament to Angelo State 71-60.
