RIO RANCHO — Five errors, including two in the top of the seventh inning, helped end Floyd’s hopes for a Class 1-2A state baseball title on Thursday.
Second-seeded McCurdy capitalized on the mistakes, scoring four runs in the seventh, and advanced to today’s 9 a.m. championship game against top-seeded Melrose at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque championship game with a 9-5 victory over the Broncos.
Floyd (19-4), seeded third, started well with three runs in the first two innings, but in the third the errors started. Two miscues in that frame allowing McCurdy (21-3) to tie the game.
“They put the pressure on us,” Floyd coach Darwin Chenault said. “They got on base and we let the pressure get to us this time.”
The Broncos regained a 5-3 advantage in the fourth, but in the sixth Floyd committed another that helped the Bobcats score twice and pull even. The roof fell in in the seventh.
“That was a killer,” Chenault said. “We just handed it to them, honestly. You hate to play one of your worst games this time of the season, but that’s what happened.”
Seven of the Bobcats’ runs were scored as the result of Floyd errors.
Still, Chenault was happy with the Broncos’ play this year.
“It was a successful season,” he said. “We’re the only 1A team that was left in the tournament. Everyone else is 2A that we’re playing against. I’m disappointed that we didn’t go further, but I’m very proud of this bunch of kids.”
As for next year, Chenault believes the next team can get back to state.
“We’re going to take a hit or two on seniors, but our core is definitely there for a title run,” he said.
