ALBUQUERQUE — With the first day of the Class 4A state track meet completed, Portales athletes had a great showing in the preliminaries as they advanced in 10 races that will conclude today. In addition to the races, five Rams placed in the top-six in their field events.

After the first day, the Rams have 11 1/3 points through five events on the boys side. They are third, trailing Taos (22) and Silver (16 1/3) with 16 finals coming up today.

The girls have finished four events — three in field competition and the 1,600. They have 4 1/2 points and are ninth, with Taos also leading that division with 17 points to 13 for Hope Christian.

In field events, four boys finished in the top six for PHS, led by a second-place finish from senior Jesse LeMier in pole vault at 13-feet. Silver’s Jeremiah Burke won it at 13-9, while Rams freshman Aiden Cabledue finished in a three-way tie for sixth place at 11-6.

Meantime, senior Jordan Davis was fourth in high jump at an even 6-feet, and junior Trenton Small also placed fourth in discus at 138-2.

On the track senior Jordan Davis came in fifth in the 100 prelims with a time of 11.6 seconds, while senior Bronte Staugaard had the top time in the 400 at 50.4 and was second place in the 200 at 23.0. In relays, the Rams had the second-best time in the 400, the best time in the 800 and the third-best in the 1,600 at 3:31.3.

Sophomore Jessie Campbell brought home five points for the Lady Rams in high jump at 5-2.

The girls advanced to the finals in four track events. They finished second in the 400 relay at 50.7 and fifth in the 800 relay with a time of 1:50.9, while junior Taryn Kizer was sixth in the 100 at 13.0 and had the fastest time in the 200 at 26.2.

Portales coach Glenn Johnson was pleased with the results of the first day of competition.

“Everyone has performed very well,” Johnson said. “I think just about everyone that’s going back to the finals has run a personal best. We’re just excited to compete in the finals and see the other half of the field events tomorrow.”
