Borden: Creating quilt fabrics featured

Information on songbirds, using stamps and inks to make quilts, and changes in kitchens will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” on Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. and on Thursday at noon. (All times are Mountain.)

Creative Living

Ray Pawley is a retired curator with the Chicago Zoological Parks. He’s going to talk about the outdoor feeding and care of a group of birds called songbirds, which are divided into two general groups: hard bills and soft bills. He lives in Hondo.

Designer and crafter Ann Butler will show how to create beautiful backgrounds for fabric to make quilts using stamps and inks. Butler’s company is Ann Butler Designs in Villard, Minnesota.

Interior designer Jenny Rausch will talk about the transformation of kitchens in the 20th century. She’ll go over the motivation for these changes, what advancements have taken place, and tell who some of the fascinating women were who brought about these changes. Her company is Karr Bick Kitchen & Bath in Brentwood, Missouri.

Information on kid-friendly citrus recipes, listening techniques, and quilting notions will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” on Tuesday at noon and on Saturday at 2 p.m. (All times are Mountain.)

Kymberly Meade is the Marketing Coordinator with TexaSweet Citrus Marketing, Inc. in Mission, Texas. She will discuss the nutritive value of citrus fruits and demonstrate some kid-friendly recipes to entice all of us to eat more fruits.

Another guest says we should listen with our eyes and hear with our heart — especially when talking to teenagers. Ruth St. Pierre’s company is Creative Business Resources in Pleasant Valley, Missouri.

Jean Gilles Dean is a quilting expert, and she's going to show lots of different needles and threads and explain when and where to use them when sewing and quilting. She lives in Midland, Texas.

Texas Citrus Salsa

• 1 Texas Red Grapefruit, peeled, sectioned and chopped

• 1 large Texas Orange, peeled, sectioned and chopped

• 1 medium tomato

• 1 cup diced green, red, and yellow bell pepper (use a mixture of all three peppers for best color contrast)

• 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced

• 3 tablespoons chopped red onion

• 1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro

• 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar

• 1/4 teaspoon salt

Mix grapefruit, orange, peppers, onion, cilantro and seasonings. Seed and chop the tomato. Combine all the salsa ingredients in a medium mixing bowl. Drain juice before serving. Makes about 2 cups. Excellent when served on top of grilled fish or chicken.
