ALBUQUERQUE — Portales senior Hannah Cabledue had already broken the Class 4A state record in pole vault earlier this season.

During Saturday’s competition in the 4A state meet at the University of New Mexico, she left no doubt as to who the queen of pole vaulting is in her class as she shattered her previous record by an entire foot.

The record coming into the season was 10 feet, 3 inches. Earlier this season, Cabledue came into this meet with a mark of 10-6.

Make that new record 11-6.

“That was a tremendous thing for the program and for her,” Portales coach Glenn Johnson said. “A lot of credit goes to her dad, who helped coach the vaulters as well as Dr. (Joel) Sievers, who has been working with our pole vaulters for five-plus years.”

The Lady Rams were 10th in the 4A meet with 26 1/2 points. Hope Christian ran away with the team title, finishing with 79 1/2 points.

Cabledue wasn’t the only PHS athlete who performed well in the two-day meet. The Portales boys finished third overall with 48 1/3 points after scoring in seven events. Taos took team honors with 97 points to 74 1/3 for Silver.

Senior Bronte Staugaard placed in four events, finishing third in the 400 with a time of 50.28 seconds and sixth in the 200 at 23.30. As part of the 800 relay, Staugaard, senior Michael Fox and juniors Alex Marquez and Adrian Short took second place with a time of 1:33.07, while Fox, Short, senior Jordan Davis and Staugaard also took second in the 1,600 relay at 3:30.83.

The team of Fox, Marquez, Short and Davis finished second in the 400 relay at 44.36.

“Bronte has done a great job all year long,” Johnson said. “Once he started getting into good track condition after basketball, he’s worked really hard to improve. With him looking to run track at the next level, it’s going to be good for him.”

In field events, junior Trenton Small finished second in shot put at 48-3 3/4 and fourth in javelin at 157-6.

In addition to Cabledue, the Lady Rams scored in four events. Junior Daniela Villanueva finished fifth in the javelin at 114-2, while on the track, junior Taryn Kizer was second in the 200 at 26.79 and fifth in the 100 at 13.05.

Kizer, along with freshman Abree Aldaz, eighth grader Karissa Willis and sophomore Trinity Staugaard placed third in the 400 relay at 50.93.

“We can say this meet was a definite success,” Johnson said. “The season as a whole has been a great success because the athletes, boys and girls, did a great job of working hard and doing what we asked them to do to get into this situation.”
