FORT SUMNER — The Fort Sumner Foxes advanced to the Class 2A state championship game on Friday night with a 50-0 rout of Jal.
Sophomore quarterback Jude Segura ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more for the top-seeded and top-ranked Foxes (11-0), who will host third-seeded Lordsburg in next weekend’s semifinal, the Mavericks beat second-seeded Escalante.
Segura scored on runs of 1 and 16 yards, and threw scoring passes of 26 yards to senior Hunter Sparks and 43 yards to sophomore Noah Maxwell. Meantime, Justin Downey, Francisco Chavez and Kreston Butterfield each rushed for a touchdown.
Butterfield went 6-for-6 on PAT kicks, and the Foxes went for and got a 2-point conversion after their final score late in the third quarter to bring into play the NMAA’s 50-point lead rule after halftime.
The Foxes posted a 394-197 advantage in total offense and forced four Panthers turnovers. Sophomore Gavin Trevino carried 23 times for 130 yards and caught one pass for 35 yards for Jal (3-8).
Muleshoe 42, Shallowater 24 — At Shallowater, the Mules locked up third place in District 1-3A Division II with a win over the Mustangs.
Senior Jason Florez caught five passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns, and added two interceptions, one of which he returned 21 yards for a score. Senior Beto Diaz threw for 328 yards and three touchdowns while senior Michael Lozano ran for one score and caught a pass from Diaz for another.
A 20-yard TD pass from Diaz to Florez in the first minute of the second quarter gave Muleshoe (6-4, 3-2 district) a 14-0 lead, and the Mules spent most of the remainder of the game trading scores with the Mustangs (2-8, 2-2).
Diaz finished 22-for-33 for 328 yards, finding eight different receivers.
For Shallowater, sophomore quarterback Cutter Sparks threw for two scores and ran for another.
Bovina 56, Sudan 13 — At Bovina, the Mustangs took care of second place in District 3-2A Division II, scoring a pair of touchdowns in each quarter against the Hornets.
Sophomore running back Marco Sanchez ran for 222 yards on 21 carries, scoring on runs of 3 yards in the first quarter, 7 yards in the second and 1 yard in the third, while junior quarterback David Lara ran for a touchdown and threw for one as well.
Bovina (9-1, 4-1 district) led 42-7 at the end of the third quarter. The Mustangs posted a 27-13 margin in first downs and a 550-296 advantage in total offense.
Senior running back Daniel Tinajero carried 14 times for 116 yards and a touchdown for the Hornets (6-4, 3-2).
Farwell 59, Morton 0 — At Morton, the Steers made short work of the Indians with junior running back Miguel Vasquez scoring three times in the first quarter.
Meantime, the Steers (9-1, 5-0) dominated the game on defense, holding Morton (1-9, 1-4) to just two first downs and 13 total yards — seven on the ground, six on one pass completion.
Vasquez ran 74 yards for a score in the first minute and added TD runs of 1 and 23 yards later in the period. He finished with 150 yards on the ground on just eight carries, while senior LeeRoy Cervantes needed just three totes to generate 119 yards. Junior Jeremiah Smith had a pair of rushing touchdowns.
Texico 48, Clayton 6 — At Texico, the Wolverines completed a sweep of District 5-3A with an easy win over the winless Yellowjackets.
Junior Tyler Romans scored on a 5-yard run in the first quarter and returned a kickoff 85 yards for a score in the fourth after Clayton (0-9, 0-4) got its only score of the game on a 70-yard kickoff return by Brendan Thrasher.
Senior Mason Golden rushed for 148 yards on 11 carries, scoring twice on 8-yard runs in the second half. Senior quarterback Lance Myers was just 5-of-8 passing, but threw scoring passes of 15 yards to junior Craig Ray in the first quarter, 15 yards to junior Brayden Wines in the second and 13 yards to junior Cayd Bilbrey in the fourth.
Myers added 134 yards rushing on 10 carries, while Romans had 98 on nine totes.
Dora 54, Menaul 0 — At Dora, thesixth-seeded Coyotes mercy-ruled Menaul for the second time this season. The first time was a 52-0 blowout win. This time it was in the first round of the 8-man playoffs.
Hayden Skinner finished with 62 rushing yards on three carries for one rushing touchdown. He also threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Jasso and returned a punt 35-yards for a touchdown.
Dora plays at No. 3 seed Magdalena next weekend in a quarterfinal matchup.
