ENMU’s Kassandra Harris takes a contested shot in the first quarter of ENMU’s Saturday game against Fort Lewis College. Harris finished with 10 points, one of four Hounds to finish in double figures but ENMU lost 73-69.
ENMU started strong, taking a 20-15 lead at the quarter, but things slowly unraveled for the Hounds. They were outscored 41-25 in the second and third quarters and the deficit was a bit too much to make up.
“We just had some breakdowns defensively,” ENMU coach Josh Prock said. “Give them credit. They hit some big time shots. That’s just how it goes sometimes.”
Johana McClelland and Amari Dennis lead the Hounds with 13 points apiece, while Daeshi McCants and Kassandra Harris added 12 and 10, respectively. Harris also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
The Skyhawks (2-0), who downed Texas-Permian Basin on Friday, were paced by Kaitlyn Romero’s 15 points, while Kayla Herrera joined her in double figures with 13.
ENMU held the lead for the majority of the first half until Briana Clah drained a 3-point shot with 1:28 left in the second quarter to give Fort Lewis a 33-31 lead that it held for the remainder of the contest.
“We’ve got to work on those defensive breakdowns,” Prock said. “Offensively, it’s coming well. We’ve got some good scorers on this team. I love them. They continue to work hard every day.”
The Hounds had the lead in points off turnovers, points in the paint, second-chance points and fast break points, but the Skyhawks used a slight scoring advantage off the bench to help them pull out the win.
“We just didn’t get enough defensive stops this game. Sometimes that’s just what happens,” Prock said.
ENMU returns to action on Friday with a 5 p.m. (MST) clash against Wayland Baptist at Plainview, Texas.
