Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
The Portales event is 10:30 a.m. Dec. 3 at ENMU in the ballroom.
PORTALES — The Christmas spirit is underway in Portales.
Altrusa International of Portales is hosting its 19th annual Holiday Happening 10:30 a.m. Dec. 3 at the Eastern New Mexico University Campus Union Ballroom.
The event is held to celebrate the season and support a good cause, according to club President Cozetta Moore.
"It's just a significant event for people in our community to start the holiday season,' said Moore.
The fundraiser includes a meal, table decorations by the hostesses and a style and fashion show.
"We are doing a pecan-crusted chicken, carrot soufflé, salad and cheesecake," said Moore. "People come up with different ideas (for decorations). We work all year long finding and looking for perfect holiday items — dishes, table clothes, flowers, Nativity scenes, Santas and snowmen."
The money raised goes to the club's goal to promote reading and literacy in the public schools, Moore said.
"We have helped with playground equipment, purchasing tablets in the special education departments in the Portales schools and books for every second grader in Roosevelt County," said Moore.
Moore said a silent auction will also be held.
"Many businesses and individuals donate items," said Moore. "There are beautiful wreaths, Christmas and Nativity scene decorations, warmers. We have NFL (National Football League) memorabilia and several gift certificates for restaurants and businesses."
Moore said there will be 66 tables this year with 60 already sold.
This is a major increase from when the event started in the memorial building 19 years ago, she said, when there were 21 tables hosted.
Moore added the average profits are $5,500 to $7,000.
"We raided $5,300 last year," said Moore. "We certainly would like to do that again this year, close to that for sure."
With the ticket sales deadline approaching, event co-chair Dannah Brown said residents interested in the event should purchase tickets soon.
"No tickets are available at the door," said Brown. "By Monday we have to turn in our count."
Residents can purchase tickets in advance through Brown at James Polk Stone Community Bank on 109 East Second Street or at 575-356-3705 or 575-607-6201. Individual tickets are $30 each and a table of eight is $160.
