Class 6A champs top CHS

RIO RANCHO — For a team coming off a pair of long seasons, facing the defending Class 6A champions was a tough way to start.

Clovis High’s boys measured up fairly well, though. They led Rio Rancho through most of the first quarter before the Rams took over and rolled to a 100-74 win on Saturday night.

No individual stats were immediately available from the game.

“It was encouraging for us to be able to score,” CHS coach Scott Robinson, whose team averaged around 45 ppg en route to a 3-23 mark last season. “Obviously, giving up what we did, we’re disappointed, but hats off to Rio Rancho.”

The Wildcats used an 11-1 surge to take an early 13-6 lead. Rio Rancho came back to lead 19-17 before the Cats scored the next seven points and carried a 24-21 advantage into the second stanza.

The Rams scored the first nine points of the second period and finished with a 36-21 edge in the period. CHS cut it to 57-50 with , but a 3 by junior guard Derrell White made it 64-52 and the margin was never in single figures after that.
