PORTALES — The 2016 state champion Portales High football team was honored Wednesday at the Portales High gym in a rally that included the student body, as well as district administrators and community members.
Started off by Portales High Athletic Director Mark Gallegos, the football team was first introduced and honored while standing next to the blue trophy - the fifth earned by the Rams. After a performance by the Rams cheer squad, head coach Jamie Ramirez presented the trophy to Superintendent Johnnie Cain.
In attendance with Cain were Assistant Superintendent David Van Wettering, school board members Mary Lou Rowley and Antonio Sanchez, and Henry Montano, the director of Federal Programs.
Ramirez gave a brief speech to the student body, crediting the team's coaching staff and players for this season's success.
