1976: The New Mexico Department of Corrections held its monthly meeting in Clovis.

Officials announced there were 1,360 people in state prisons - a record.

Clovis' Reuben Nieves was the commission's chairman.

The NMDOC website reports there are about 7,240 inmates in population today.

1976: The third try was the charm for Clovis City Commissioner Jim Jacobs. After two failed attempts, he had finally convinced fellow commissioners to raise the rates on hangar rentals at Clovis Municipal Airport.

Dirt-floor hangar rentals were going from $30 per month to $40; paved-floor hangars were going from $37.50 to $50; and large hangars were going from $85 to $115.

Airport Director Kyle Berkshire said rates have not changed much in 40 years. Today's rates range from $75 to $115 per month.

Amarillo's Western National Bank was robbed of at least $10,000 by three men in Halloween masks.

Witnesses said two men vaulted over the teller counters and began going through cash drawers. The third man stayed near the front door.

All three men had guns.

The incident happened about 20 minutes after the bank opened. The robbery was completed in less than five minutes with no injuries, United Press International reported.
