Portales girls reach finals

SANTA FE — Wade Fraze thought Friday’s championship semifinal game against longtime rival Lovington did his Portales Lady Rams some good.

Sophomore Taylee Rippee scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Lady Rams (3-0) advanced to today’s 5:30 p.m. championship game against Santa Fe Indian Prep with a 42-36 win over their former longtime district opponent.

“Win or lose, it was a good game for us,” Fraze said. “We had to overcome adversity in different ways.”

The game was tight throughout, and the Lady Wildcats (2-6) actually had a small lead midway through the final period. But PHS converted 11-of-16 free throws in the final stanza to pull out the win.

“It was a very physical game,” Fraze said. “Lovington’s a good ballteam; they’re athletic and physical, and I think they’ll continue to improve.”

Junior Lindsey Blakey added six points and nine rebounds. Junior Zamorye Cox led the team with four steals.

Senior Azaria Stewart scored 18 points and senior Japeria Wright added 10 for the Lady Wildcats. Each had two of the team’s five 3-pointers.
