Eldorado rolls past Lady Cats

RIO RANCHO — Clovis High’s girls hung around for three quarters on Saturday before three games in three days got the best of them.

Guard Sydney Candelaria broke loose for 14 of her 31 points in the final quarter as the Eagles beat the Lady Wildcats 66-42 for fifth place in the Mel Otero Invite.

Clovis (4-3) trailed just 43-36 at the start of the final stanza, but couldn’t keep up.

“We were hanging in there until the fourth quarter, and things sort of fell apart,” CHS coach Jeff Reed said. “They just wore us down.”

No one else had more than six points for Eldorado (5-1), but Candelaria’s output proved to be too much. The Eagles and Lady Cats face off twice later in District 2-6A play.

Meantime, senior Monay Phillips had a big day with six 3-pointers and a career-best 18 points for the Lady Cats. Junior Teya Morris fiished with 14 points.

The Lady Cats had eight 3-point baskets in the game, but just four 2-pointers.

Clovis returns to action on Tuesday, hosting former district rival Hobbs in a 7 p.m. tipoff at Rock Staubus Gym.
