1976: The Clovis High School Wildcat Band was selling fruitcake as a fundraiser and had plenty of 2-pound tins and 2-pound bars remaining.

"We understand (band Director Norvil Howell) has to eat all the cakes that haven't been sold by Christmas," Clovis News-Journal Managing Editor Bill Southard wrote in his "Memo from the editor" column.

1971: Walgreens was "Your 1 stop Santa shop."

Three rolls of gift wrap went for 48 cents.

A package of 25 bows was 39 cents.

Extension cords were 48 cents.

A complete 8-track stereo went for $49.97.

1966: Walt Disney, the cartoonist turned movie mogul and amusement park operator, died at age 65.

He died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Hollywood, where he had returned for a post-operative checkup following surgery.

Disney, a heavy smoker since World War I, had been diagnosed with lung cancer just a month earlier.

He produced 81 feature-length pictures during his career, including "Pinocchio," "Cinderella," "Treasure Island" and "Peter Pan."

His estate, which included 14 percent of Walt Disney Productions, was worth about $20 million, which he left to family and a charitable trust.
