Peanut Valley Toastmasters
On Dec. 12, Peanut Valley Toastmasters held their weekly meeting from 7 p.m.–8 p.m. at the KENW Broadcast Center in Portales.
Sergeant at Arms Kenny Welborn delivered a speech from his Competent Communicator manual titled “High Flight.” Guest speaker Bailey Grady presented her icebreaker, “A Short Word About Stars” and won best speaker. Vice President of Education Donna Labatt won best evaluator for her comments on Kenny’s speech. Club President James Mamone won best table topics for his impromptu speech on “A Moment of Awe.”
Toastmasters provides a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth. Meetings are held every Thursday at 7 p.m. at the KENW Broadcast Center in Portales. Guests are welcome.

Portales Woman’s Club
Portales Woman’s Club met Dec. 14. President Cami Howl presiding. There were 21 members and 3 guests present. Two new members, Opal Evans and Reca Lee, joined the club.
The treasurer’s report was filed for audit.
Lori Dunn introduced students and teachers from Brown Early Childhood Elementary school who entertained with Christmas carols. The club donated books to be given to the school in honor of the program.
Gaynelle Thomas introduced others who served on the hostess committee: Alisa Boswell, Mary Louise Childress and her daughter, Alowetta Terrien who was visiting from out of town.
The next meeting will be the lighting of the birthday candle in recognition of the club’s 114th birthday. The date will be Jan. 11 at 11:30 am at the club building.
The club was asked to bring valentines for the children’s home residents to have for February and to bring toiletries and articles for the Hartley House to the January meeting.
