Power out in Roosevelt County

Dora, Elida, Milnesand affected as 65 mph winds blow over power lines.

PORTALES — High winds caused major power outages in three Roosevelt County Saturday.

Roosevelt County Electric Cooperative Office Assistant Janice Sisneros said three transmission and three distribution poles were damaged, with Dora, Elida and Milnesand affected.

Milnesand Fire Chief John Mohon said two major high power lines west of Milnesand were damaged, while two poles south and one to two poles east of Milnesand were also broken.

Winds reaching 65 mph caused the poles to be knocked down, Mohon said.

RCEC Line Superintendent Leslie Rector agreed winds were the cause for pole damages, but said 65 mph “would be a very conservative estimate.”

“I would guess 90 mph just looking at the damage,” said Rector.

Rector said he was still in the process of determining how many lines were affected as of Saturday afternoon, with areas east and west of Milnesand primarily affected.

Dora and Elida had power outages but were fixed by Saturday afternoon, Rector added.

Rector said he hoped most areas would be back on by Saturday night, although one residence east of Milnesand would still be without power through the night since electricity poles would need to be changed.
