Cats, Lady Cats end up in dual meet

LOS ALAMOS — Clovis High’s swimming teams headed out for a nine-team invitational on Saturday morning and a dual meet broke out.

CHS squads were able to make it to Los Alamos for the Bill Hudson Memorial Invitational. Unfortunately, the other seven visiting teams — most from the Albuquerque area — didn’t make it so it turned into a dual with the homestanding Hilltoppers.

No team scores were kept, but CHS coach Vincent de Maio said it was good training in a 7,300-foot elevation.

“It was a great opportunity,” he said. “And they were happy to see us” to get in some semblance of a meet.

Junior James Skuse led the way, posting four first-place finishes in boys competition, including two relays. The Wildcats and Lady Wildcats each scored in 10 of the 11 events.

“James had a great meet,” de Maio said. “James is swimming really well. He’s been the team leader.”

And both teams got a lot out of it, he added.

“All the top three times were faster than last year when all the teams were there,” de Maio said.

The Cats and Lady Cats used the meet to experiment a bit.

Clovis teams are now off from competition until Jan. 6-7, when they travel to a meet at Andrews, Texas.
