Greyhounds half-game up in LSC standings
SILVER CITY — It might just be for a few days, but the Eastern New Mexico University women are alone atop the Lone Star Conference.
Sarina Johnson and Brandi Gomez led a balanced effort with 13 points each in Tuesday night’s 80-67 win over Western New Mexico for the program’s third 5-0 conference start since the school joined the LSC in the 1984-85 season.
Kassandra Harris scored 12, while Daeshi McCants posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. Four other Greyhounds scored at least seven points, with Jasmine Hotchkins posting a seven-point, nine-assist night.
The Greyhounds (9-3, 5-0 LSC), who led by as many as 25 before Western rallied in the fourth to make it respectable, moved a half-game ahead of idle Angelo State (10-0, 4-0) atop the conference standings. The Rambelles host Tarleton State Thursday.
Playing as the then-Zias, ENMU went 6-0 to start the 1998-99 season and 9-0 to start their LSC title season in 1992-93. Both were coached by Wayne Moore.
The Greyhounds, in their fourth season under Josh Prock never trailed and jumped out to an 18-6 lead in the first quarter. They iced the game with a 16-5 burst to open the second half.
The Mustangs (4-8, 0-5) were led by Jordan Gutierrez with 24 points. Jade Botelho scored 18, while Megan Looney added 17 points and 16 boards for Western.
The Greyhounds are back on the road Saturday, when they face Texas Woman’s in a noon (MST) tipoff in Denton, Texas.
