Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Roosevelt County Manager Amber Hamilton will be updating county commissioners on the latest status with Roosevelt Road Q 1/2 east of Portales.
County officials have been looking into remedies to make the road — which includes a deep-pitted pit in the middle of it — safer for drivers.
According to county residents who live on the road near the dip, two stops signs that were placed on both sides of the deep a couple of years ago have not discouraged drivers from speeding on the road
The road was discussed by commissioners at their Nov. 15 meeting, along with City Manager Sammy Standefer, who offered to have the city pay half the cost for a survey of the road because the city needs access to its wastewater plant.
County Road Superintendent Ricky Lovato said at the meeting that putting a barrier south of the intersection, a road closure sign on 21st Street and a barrier north of the plant would be the most fiscally sound option if the road were to be closed.
He also said three sets of LED blinking signs would cost a total of $4,587.40 while four sets of concrete barriers would cost $2,195.
Hamilton told commissioners at a meeting last month that she and other officials have been on multiple field trips to the road to come up with solutions.
She said Standefer arranged for Lydick Engineering of Clovis to do a survey of the ditch and the road in order to understand the right-of-way on the road and how much room drivers have.
At today’s meeting, commissioners will also hear a presentation at their regular meeting today updating them on the NM/AZ Coalition of Counties.
The coalition is an entity that legally represents New Mexico counties in regard to various state issues.
The county’s representative on the coalition board, Kendall Buzard, will be giving the presentation.
Kevin Spears will give another presentation to commissioners on Roosevelt County Drug Court.
The following are resolutions on today’s agenda:
• Compliance with the New Mexico Open Meetings Act
• Public participation at Roosevelt County Commission meetings
• Delegation of authority to county manager for disbursement of vendor checks
• Delegation of authority to county manager to enter into certain contracts and settlement agreements
• Continuation of the Roosevelt County Loss Prevention Committee
• Setting fees, rates and costs for Roosevelt County
• Budget adjustments for Milnesand Volunteer Fire Department
