CLOVIS — It's a pretty tall order, but Clovis High's boys could actually head into District 2-6A play next week at the .500 mark.
The Wildcats' task is to beat a Hobbs squad which thumped them by 30 points last Saturday at Hobbs.
Nevertheless, they'll have a chance to reach break-even after improving to 7-8 for the season with a 51-48 win over Roswell Goddard on Tuesday night at The Rock.
Junior guard Jakeem Wynn scored 19 points and junior center Jonathan Williams added 12 as the Cats survived a seesaw fourth quarter against the Rockets (8-8).
"It was just one of those hard-fought games," CHS boys coach Scott Robinson said. "It was kind of a grind. Fortunately, we made enough plays at the end to win. This was one that was important for us to get."
Senior guard LeAnthony Harrison finished with the game's only five 3-pointers and 26 points for the Rockets, while junior center Dalin Stanford added 14. But Goddard got only two points each from four other players, and it wasn't enough.
The Cats build a six-point lead after one quarter, but the Rockets came back to tied it at halftime. Clovis took a 38-35 lead into the final period and simply held on late.
Williams made two free throws late to help seal it.
"Jonathan played well down the stretch," Robinson said. "He really helped us seal the deal."
