Portales Woman’s Club
Portales Woman’s Club met on Jan. 11 with President Cami Howl presiding. Following the pledges and collect, the meeting was called to order. There were 20 members and 2 guests present. Guests included Judy Bartl and Valerie Davis.
The treasurer’s report was filed for audit and the minutes were approved. Sheryl Borden won the door prize.
The President, assisted by Jacquelyn Houser, conducted the lighting of the candle in recognition of the club’s 114th anniversary.
Mary Louise Childress, Chair of the Home Life Committee, asked members to bring items at the February and March meetings for the Hartley House, which the club supports.
Erinn Burch introduced others who served on the hostess committee: Lori Dunn and Noelle Bartl.
The next meeting will be Feb. 8. Guests are always welcome.
Roosevelt County Extension
The RCEA Council met Jan. 3 at the McAlister Room. President Panzy Jordan called the meeting to order. 21 members and one guest attended. The devotional was given by Cathy Wilhoit from Friendship Club.
The minutes for the Dec. 5 meeting were approved.
Janie Phillips, outgoing treasurer, reported the 2017 proposed budget.
Under old business, a report was given on group insurance covering a member going to actives and meetings. State Extension of New Mexico will pay the insurance in 2017 only, giving the county time to get funding.
Historian Jean Mason asked that anyone with pictures of 2016 events get them in for the scrapbook.
New business was about hosting District IV Cultural Arts meeting to be held April 1-20 in Portales. Duties were given: Judging and noon meal, Working 9 to 5 program, Bethel; refreshments, Causey; decorations, Elida; Cultural Arts entry help, Friendship.
The program was given by Connie Moyers.
Bethel Extension Club
The Bethel Extension Club met Jan. 10 at the home of Panzy Jordan. Debra Peacock called roll with 12 members and one visitor in attendance. Debra read the December minutes. Motion to approve the minutes was made by Sue Letz and seconded by Joyce Welch. Motion as approved unanimously.
Members ill are Sue Gray, Pauline Clark and Connie Moyers, who broke her arm.
Members had discussed the Bethel Cemetery in December. Many of the ladies were unaware of its existence. Research to find out more about community and where our club name came from was proposed. Pat Terry brought a calendar the RCEA had put out with pictures and short histories of several outlying former communities.
Meeting to take place during the summer months was approved by the members. A program consisting of each person present giving a brief history of their own family heritage was given. Delicious refreshments were served by Panzy.
