Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
The Clovis city commission is scheduled to meet 5:15 p.m. today at the North Annex of the Clovis Carver Public Library. A key item is requested approval of a resolution opposing state legislation the resolution references would impose rules, regulations and restrictions exceeding federal law on private firearm transfers between individuals and on all firearms sales at gun shows, Including the Clovis Lions Club event.
According to the measure, Resolution 2859-2017 stands in opposition to proposed state legislation supported by Everytown for Gun Safety, which is described by organizers as a nonprofit which advocates for gun control and against gun violence.
“Senate Bill 48 and House Bill 50 would criminalize nearly all private firearm sales and most temporary firearm transfers between individuals — including some family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers and fellow gun club members,” per the resolution. “And require them to be conducted through a federal firearms licensed dealer with extensive government paperwork of an undetermined fee.”
The resolution also addresses the potential impact of the proposed state legislation on the March 2017 Clovis Lions Club gun show, adding the bills would impose additional costs and recordkeeping requirements on buyers and sellers at gun shows.
“The projected revenue loss to the Clovis area economy from no longer being able to hold the Clovis Lions Club gun shows each year would be $350,000 to $400,000,” according to the resolution. “Funds raised from the Clovis Lions Club gun shows, approximately $35,000 and $40,000 each year, are utilized to help charitable organizations, scholarships and people in need.”
Other anticipated agenda items include:
• Quarterly Lodger's Tax disbursements totaling $65,200.
• A resolution for implementation of an Asset Management Plan.
• Recognition of the city’s Teen Community Emergency Response team.
