Angelo State hands Hounds fourth loss in row

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Senior guard Quay King scored 16 points and had four 3-pointers on Saturday, and Angelo State used a couple of big early runs to post an 84-68 Lone Star Conference men’s basketball victory over Eastern New Mexico University.

The Rams (12-4, 4-4 LSC) put four players in double figures and were on cruise control most of the way in winning their second in a row following a four-game losing streak.

ENMU (7-12, 1-8) dropped its four consecutive game. Junior guard Chris Lewis led the Hounds with 15 points, while senior guard Chris Wyms added 12 and junior guard Lamarquis Thompson 11.

Lewis scored on a putback dunk on the first possession of the game for ENMU, but the Rams scored 10 consecutive points with King hitting a pair of 3-pointers. Lewis broke the Greyhounds’ drought with another dunk before the Rams went off on an 8-0 tear to lead by 14 just over five minutes in.

King’s third 3-pointer with 12 minutes to go in the half made it 25-6. ASU led by 24 points late in the half before settling for a 47-26 advantage at the intermission.

The Hounds tried to hang around and make a game of it. They got the margin down to 10 points on three occasions in the final five minutes, the last at 76-66 on two free throws by junior guard Shawn Shelton with 2:23 to play.

Senior guard Devonte Pratt added 15 points for ASU, while senior guard Napolean Onyeje posted 13 points and a game-high seven assists off the bench and junior forward Brandon Williams finished with 12 points.

The Hounds are back in action on Thursday, hosting LSC rival West Texas A&M in a 7:30 p.m. start at Greyhound Arena.
