CARLSBAD — Clovis High’s girls made a clean sweep of the Artesia Invitational on Saturday. The boys, meantime, settled for a near-sweep.
The Lady Wildcats won all 11 events on the girls side while the boys were first in eight of 11. Clovis won the girls division with 316 points to 195 for Hobbs and took boys team honors with 275 to 214 for the Eagles in a six-team get-together.
Clovis didn’t swim its top swimmers in all events, instead choosing to let them do some different events.
“I thought the kids had a great meet,” CHS swimming coach Vincent de Maio said. “We picked up four new (state-)qualifying times and another three (season-best) times.”
Sophomore Hannah Luscombe led the Lady Cats with a pair of individual wins and legs on two winning relays. Fellow sophomore Nina Mead won the 100 butterfly and also swam on two winning relays, while junior Annie Smith came away with victories in the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke.
For the boys, junior James Skuse had two individual and two relay wins, including a state-qualifying time of 5:06.66 to lead a 1-2-3 sweep of the 500 freestyle. Junior Seiji Aponte also had a hand in three wins for the Wildcats — the 100 butterfly and two relays.
CHS squads will compete in their final regular-season meet on Saturday, the Hobbs Invitational. Hobbs will also be the site for district competition the following weekend, with the state meet on tap for Feb. 17-18 at Albuquerque Academy.
