'Hell or High Water' gets four Oscar nominations

“Hell or High Water,” the movie partially filmed in Clovis, Portales and Tucumcari, received four Oscar nominations Tuesday morning, including one for best picture.

Among individuals, Jeff Bridges was nominated for supporting actor, Taylor Sheridan for original screenplay and Jake Roberts for film editing.

The awards ceremony is scheduled Feb. 26 at Dolby Theatre Hollywood in Los Angeles.

Nick Mondgragon of the Clovis / Curry County Chamber of Commerce served as a liaison for the film. He figured after seeing the movie that Sheridan would get a nod for his script and one or more actors had a chance at nominations, but best picture was a surprise.

“It wasn’t a surprise, but it was a surprise we got as many (nominations) as we did,” Mondragon said. “I don’t anticipate a big win at the Oscars, but having been nominated is an honor in itself.”

The film, directed by David Mackenzie, follows a pair of brothers who plan a series of bank robberies to raise enough money to keep the family farm. Bridges plays the Texas Ranger tasked to catch the robbers, played by Chris Pine and Ben Foster.

“La La Land” led the way with a record-tying 14 Oscar nominations, including best picture. Other best picture nominees are “Arrival,” “Fences,” “Hacksaw Ridge,” “Hidden Figures,” “Lion,” “Manchester by the Sea” and “Moonlight.”

This is the seventh Oscar nomination for Bridges, who won best actor in 2010 for “Crazy Heart.”

Sheridan’s Oscar nomination is his first.

Roberts is also a first-time nominee.
