CHS swimmers post wins at Hobbs

HOBBS — Clovis High’s swimming teams continued to roll in their final regular-season tuneup on Saturday, breezing to team titles in the Hobbs Invitational.

The Wildcats scored 211 points to 156 1/2 for the runnerup Eagles on the boys’ side, while the Lady Wildcats had a huge margin with 243 points to 126 for Hobbs in the six-school competition.

CHS squads return to Hobbs this weekend for District 3 competition, which will include everybody from Saturday’s meet plus Las Cruces, a team comprised of that city’s four largest high schools.

CHS swimming coach Vincent de Maio said that while the boys should win the district meet, the girls face a stiff challenge from the Cruces squad.

“Next week will be a different story,” he said. “(The) Las Cruces girls are going to be tough; they’ve got three really good swimmers.

“If our kids get up and race, it’ll be a really good meet.”

Both Clovis teams scored in all 11 events on Saturday, although the boys in particular were doing a little shuffling of the lineup. The Cats won seven events, including two relays and five individual swimmers with one title apiece.

Meantime, the Lady Wildcats won all 11 events. Junior Olivia Reeb and sophomore Hannah Luscombe each won a pair of individual events, and Luscombe was also a part of two winning relays.
