Weekly New Mexico fishing report

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Animas River — Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 279 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using woolly buggers, San Juan worms, streamers, small jigs and salmon eggs for trout.

Albuquerque Area Drains — Fishing on the Albuquerque Drain, Belen Drain, Corrales Drain and Peralta Drain was good using wax worms, egg patterns, San Juan worms, salmon eggs, worms and small streamers for trout. Anglers also reported catching a few small bass and carp on the Albuquerque Drain. We had no other reports.

Bluewater Lake — Closed to ice fishing due to thin ice conditions. There was some open water for shoreline fishing. Fishing was slow with just a few trout caught by anglers using PowerBait. For updates on ice conditions, contact the state park office at (505) 876-2391.

Brazos River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes — Closed by the U.S. Forest Service until further notice due to danger from falling trees.

Chama River — Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 101 cfs and 79 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was fair using San Juan worms, small nymphs and salmon eggs for a mix of brown and rainbow trout. Fishing below Abiquiu was fair using micro mays, zebra midges and copper John Barrs for trout.

Cochiti Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

El Vado Lake — We had no reports from anglers.

Fenton Lake — Closed to fishing and all other activities due to thin ice conditions. For updates, call the state park office at (575) 829-3630.

Heron Lake — Closed to fishing and all other activities due to thin ice conditions. For updates, call the state park office at (575) 588-7470.

Jackson Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters — Stream flow on the Jemez River near Jemez Springs on Monday morning was 27 cfs. Early in the week, fishing on the Jemez was fair to good using wax worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports from other streams in the area.

Lake Farmington — We had no reports from anglers this week. Nonmotorized watercraft are now allowed on Lake Farmington. Fees are $50 for the season or $5 daily.

Manzano Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Navajo Lake — Fishing pressure was light. Fishing was slow for all species.

San Gregorio Lake — We had no reports from anglers.

San Juan River — Stream flow from Navajo Reservoir on Monday was increased to 500 cfs last Friday and was at 511 cfs on Monday. The increase was due to the increasing snowpack in the San Juan River Basin. Trout fishing through the Quality waters was fair using streamers, wooly buggers, red annelids, Desert Storms, red larva, bunny leeches, egg patterns and princess nymphs. Fishing through the bait waters was slow to fair using worms, PowerBait, wooly buggers, red annelids and jerk baits.

Tingley Beach — Fishing at the Central and Youth ponds was very good using PowerBait, Zeke’s trout bait, wax worms, salmon eggs and San Juan worms for trout. We had no other reports.

Trout Lakes — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Northeast

Cimarron River — Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 8.1 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Conchas Lake — Fishing was fair using slab spoons and jigs at 40 to 45 feet for walleye and an occasional white bass. We had no other reports.

Cowles Ponds — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Coyote Creek — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Rock Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake — As of this past weekend, ice thickness was about 13 inches. Fishing was fair using meal worms, earth worms, PowerBait and ice jigs for rainbow trout, kokanee and perch. Anglers having the best luck were working the baits rather than letting them sit. For updates on ice conditions, call the state park office at (575) 377-1594. The annual Fish Fest will begin Labor Day weekend this year and run from September 2 through 12.

Gallinas River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Hopewell Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Alice — The lake remains closed to ice fishing due to poor ice conditions. For updates on ice conditions, call the state park office at (505) 445-5607.

Lake Maloya — As of this past Friday, the ice thickness was about nine inches. Fishing was reported as very good by anglers using jigs and green garlic salmon eggs. For updates on ice conditions, call the state park office at (505) 445-5607.

Los Pinos River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Monastery Lake — Anglers are reminded that ice fishing is not permitted on this lake.

Pecos River — Fishing was fair using salmon eggs, worms, egg patterns and small bright colored nymphs for trout.

Red River — Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday was 32 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs, wooly buggers and San Juan worms for rainbow trout.

Rio Grande — Stream flow on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 381 cfs. Fishing was fair using streamers, San Juan worms and weighted wooly buggers for rainbow trout. We had no other reports.

Rio Hondo — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Pueblo — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Barbara River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Cruz Reservoir — We had no reports from anglers this week. No ice fishing is allowed on this lake.

Shuree Ponds — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Springer Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week. Ice fishing is not permitted.

Storrie Lake — The ice has disappeared and the shoreline is once again open for bank fishing. We had no reports from anglers. For updates, call the state park office at 505-425-7278.

Ute Lake — Fishing was good using spoons and soft plastics at 40 feet for smallmouth bass and an occasional largemouth bass. Fishing was good using Slingblades and slab spoons at 50 to 60 feet for walleye. Fishing was fair to good using slab spoons at 45 to 50 feet for white bass. feet for white bass. We had no other reports.

Winsor Creek — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Southwest

Alumni Pond — Fishing was very good using PowerBait, worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Bear Canyon Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bill Evans Lake — Fishing was good using PowerBait, Zeke’s trout bait, worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Caballo Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Elephant Butte Lake — Fishing was fair to good using spoons and jigs for white bass. We had no other reports.

Escondida Lake — Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, homemade dough bait, wax worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Gila River — Stream flow on Monday morning was 420 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond — Fishing was good using PowerBait for trout.

Lake Roberts — Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Percha Dam — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Quemado Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Grande — Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 0.05 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Snow Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Young Pond — The pond was closed to fishing for a short time this past week while repairs were made to wind damaged structures. When it reopened, fishing was very good using PowerBait for trout.

Southeast

Alto Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bataan Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Black River — Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 12 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs for trout.

Blue Hole Park Pond — Fishing was good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.

Bonito Lake — Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage.

Bosque Redondo Lake — Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, wax worms and Pistol Petes for trout. We had no other reports.

Bottomless Lakes — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Brantley Lake — Anglers are required to catch and release all fish here as high levels of pesticides have been found in some fish. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chaparral Park Lake — Fishing was good using worms, salmon eggs and small spoons for trout.

El Rito Creek — Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and meal worms for trout. We had no other reports.

Eunice Lake — Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and corn salmon egg combinations for trout.

Green Meadow Lake — Fishing was very good using PowerBait and worms for trout.

Greene Acres Lake — Fishing was very good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, worms and homemade dough bait for trout.

Grindstone Reservoir — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jal Lake — Fishing was good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Lake Van — Fishing was good using PowerBait, worms and homemade dough bait for trout. We had no other reports.

Oasis Park Lake — Fishing was very good using homemade dough bait and Pistol Petes for trout.

Pecos River — Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 21 cfs. Trout fishing was fair using PowerBait and salmon eggs. We had no other reports.

Perch Lake — Fishing was good using homemade dough bait, PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.

Ruidoso River — Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 2.3 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
