CLOVIS — The Clovis High girls basketball team can only hope they get junior guard Teya Morris back from injury soon.
Minus Morris and her nearly 18 ppg average, the Lady Wildcats struggled to score on Saturday night and dropped a 54-30 District 2-6A decision to Eldorado at Rock Staubus Gym.
"We do miss her 18 points per game, especially when you lose by 24," CHS girls coach Jeff Reed said. "We held them down fairly well, but we just can't score."
Reed said Morris is scheduled to be checked out on Tuesday in Amarillo. A best-case scenario is that she returns for Saturday's game at Santa Fe High, but Reed said it's more likely she could be back the following week.
The Lady Wildcats (8-14, 1-5 district) fell out of contention after a 1-for-10, four-point second quarter, after which they trailed 29-13.
"In the fourth quarter the game got away a little bit," Reed said. "But we gave up too many points in the first quarter."
Senior guard Sydney Candelaria, who scored 31 points against CHS in the Mel Otero Invite but managed just 15 in the earlier district meeting in Eldorado, had 13 this time. She was the only player in double figures for the Eagles (16-4, 5-1).
Meantime, sophomore Kaydee Weaver scored 12 points for the Lady Cats, one point short of her previous high in January against Manzano.
Eldorado 73, Clovis 48 (boys) — At Albuquerque, Kameron Valencia scored 14 to lead five Eagles in double figures, and Eldorado never looked back after a tone-setting 20-8 first quarter to stay perfect in district play.
"First quarter, they came out and mixed zone and man," Wildcats coach Scott Robinson said. "They settled into man (in) the second quarter, but it kept us off balance early and kept us from getting any rhythm offensively."
Jaylen Domina-Lovato scored 13 points, Mike Mouho and Mykol Lagarde added 12 each and Bryce Nilsson had 10 for the Eagles (15-5, 6-0 district).
"They had a pretty balanced attack," Robinson said. "We just never could get any rhythm on offense."
Taitt Kuchta and Jakeem Wynn each scored 15 points for Clovis (9-13, 2-4), while post Jonathan Williams added 11. But the Wildcats only got seven points from the rest of the roster.
"Taitt had a good game, played pretty well," Robinson said. "Obviously a good night scoring, but he did some (other) good things for us tonight. With Jakeem, they made an effort to send a lot of help his way to stop penetration. they always had help coming towards him."
Clovis teams return to action on Tuesday with district games against Manzano. Both are scheduled for 7 p.m., with the girls playing here and the boys in Albuquerque.
