Hounds absorb 9-3 setback from Lady Bulldogs

DURANT, Okla. — Southwestern Oklahoma took advantage of six Eastern New Mexico University errors on Saturday and dealt the Greyhounds a 9-3 loss in Southeastern Oklahoma’s season-opening tournament.

Both teams came into the day 0-2, but the Lady Bulldogs jumped on top quickly and never looked back, building a 7-0 lead in the top of the fourth.

ENMU got a run-scoring double from catcher Samantha Brockman in the fifth and a two-run single by right fielder Kamalani Peneku in the sixth before Southwestern, a former Lone Star Conference rival for ENMU, tacked on a couple of insurance runs in the seventh.

Taya Haney went the distance in the circle for the Lady Bulldogs, scattering six hits with five walks and seven strikeouts. Peneku and Cameron Conrad were both 2-for-3 for the Hounds

Four Southwestern runs were unearned. Kiana Zerr (0-1) worked three innings for ENMU while Tristen Castenada went the final four.

The Hounds face St. Mary’s at 8:30 a.m. and St. Edwards at 1:30 p.m. (MST) today to finish off play in the event.
