Late 8-0 surge boosts ENMU past Commerce

COMMERCE, Texas — Thursday night, the Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball team narrowly missed upsetting Lone Star Conference-leading Tarleton State on the road.

On Saturday, the Greyhounds let a huge second-half lead get away against Texas A&M-Commerce. This time, though, an 8-0 run over the final 1:20, capped by senior guard Chris Wyms’ four free throws in the closing seconds, secured a 72-65 win over the Lions (16-6, 8-5 LSC).

Three players — Wyms, Lamarquis Thompson and Chris Lewis — each finished with 13 points while guard Joe Clarke added 12 for the Hounds (9-14, 3-10), who lost in the final seconds on Thursday at Tarleton 76-74.

ENMU scored the game’s first five points and used a 13-0 run over the final five-plus minutes of the first half to extend the lead to 40-21 at the break. That grew to 49-26 with 13 1/2 minutes left on a basket by Clarke.

The Lions finally awoke, though, cutting the margin into single figures with 10 minutes left and taking their first lead at 60-59 on a Daquane Harris layup with 4:17 to go.

Thompson’s 3-pointer put ENMU ahead 64-63 with 2:44 left. Little, who finished with 19 points, gave Commerce the lead for final time at the 2:20 mark, but the Lions never scored again.

Clarke’s layup with 1:18 to go put ENMU ahead. Williford then missed a jumper, and Thompson added a basket with 49 seconds to go before Wyms added his free throws.

Malik Albert finished with a game-high 24 points for the Lions, but no one else scored more than eight points for Commerce. And while ENMU went 6-for-10 from the 3-point line, the Lions were just 3-for-22.
