Weekly New Mexico fishing report

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and New Mexico Department of Game & Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Animas River — Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 266 cfs. Fishing was fair using woolly buggers, streamers, small jigs, worms and salmon eggs for trout.

Albuquerque Area Drains — Fishing on the Albuquerque Drain, Belen Drain, Bernalillo and Peralta Drain was good using wax worms, salmon eggs, worms, egg patterns and small streamers for trout. We had no other reports.

Bluewater Lake — Closed to ice fishing due to thin ice conditions. There was still some open water for shoreline fishing this past week but we had no reports from anglers. For updates on ice conditions, contact the state park office at (505) 876-2391.

Brazos River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes — Closed by the U.S. Forest Service until further notice due to danger from falling trees.

Chama River — Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 104 cfs and 79 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was fair using small nymphs and salmon eggs for a mix of brown and rainbow trout. Fishing below Abiquiu was fair using micro mays, zebra midges and salmon eggs for trout.

Cochiti Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

El Vado Lake — Closed to ice fishing and all other activities due to thin ice conditions. Call the state park office at (575) 588-7247 for updates.

Fenton Lake — Closed to fishing and all other activities due to thin ice conditions. For updates, call the state park office at (575) 829-3630.

Heron Lake — Closed to fishing and all other activities due to thin ice conditions. For updates, call the state park office at (575) 588-7470.

Jackson Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters — Stream flow on the Jemez River near Jemez Springs on Monday morning was 34 cfs. Fishing on the Jemez was fair to good using wax worms, small bead-head nymphs and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports from other streams in the area.

Lake Farmington — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Manzano Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Navajo Lake — Fishing was slow but a few brown trout were caught by anglers trolling Rapalas. We had no other reports.

San Gregorio Lake — We had no reports from anglers.

San Juan River — Stream flow from Navajo Reservoir on Monday was 506 cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality waters was fair to good using small streamers, Desert Storms, red larva, white bunny leeches, egg patterns and princess nymphs. Fishing through the bait waters was fair using salmon eggs, PowerBait, copper John Barrs and jerk baits.

Tingley Beach — Fishing at the Central and Youth ponds was good using PowerBait, Zeke’s trout bait, homemade dough bait, garlic cheese, wax worms, salmon eggs and San Juan worms for trout. Fishing at the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond was fair using bunny leeches and small streamers.

Trout Lakes — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Northeast

Cimarron River — Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 8.1 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Conchas Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using slab spoons and jigs tipped with small plastic for walleye and white bass. We had no other reports.

Cowles Ponds — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Coyote Creek — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Rock Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake — As of this past Friday, ice thickness was about 13 inches. Fishing was fair using meal worms, earth worms, PowerBait and ice jigs for rainbow trout, kokanee and perch. Anglers having the best luck were working the baits rather than letting them sit. For updates on ice conditions, call the state park office at (575) 377-1594. The annual Fish Fest will begin Labor Day weekend this year and run from Sept. 2-10.

Gallinas River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Hopewell Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Alice — As of Friday, February 3, the lake has reopened for ice fishing but we had no reports from anglers. For updates on ice conditions, call the state park office at (505) 445-5607.

Lake Maloya — As of this past Friday, the ice thickness was about 11 inches. Fishing was good using PowerBait and homemade dough bait for trout. For updates on ice conditions, call the state park office at (505) 445-5607.

Los Pinos River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Monastery Lake — Anglers are reminded that ice fishing is not permitted on this lake.

Pecos River — Fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs, worms, egg patterns and small bright colored nymphs for trout.

Red River — Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday was 43 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using egg patterns, wooly buggers, San Juan worms, PowerBait and salmon eggs for rainbow trout.

Rio Grande — Stream flow on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 519 cfs. Fishing was slow to fair using weighted wooly buggers and worms for trout. We had no other reports.

Rio Hondo — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Pueblo — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Barbara River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Cruz Reservoir — We had no reports from anglers this week. No ice fishing is allowed on this lake.

Shuree Ponds — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Springer Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week. Ice fishing is not permitted.

Storrie Lake — Fishing was fair to good using worms and PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.

Ute Lake — Fishing for walleye and white bass appeared to have slowed some from the previous week. A few were still caught by anglers jigging spoons and soft plastics in 50 to 60 feet of water. We had no other reports. The surface water temp was in the low to mid 40s.

Winsor Creek — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Southwest

Alumni Pond — Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Bear Canyon Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bill Evans Lake — Fishing was fair using PowerBait, worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Caballo Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Elephant Butte Lake — Fishing was fair using spoons and jigs for white bass and an occasional walleye. A few were also caught by anglers using deep crank baits. Fishing for catfish was slow but a few were caught by anglers using liver. We had no other reports.

Escondida Lake — Fishing was very good using PowerBait, homemade dough bait, wax worms, salmon eggs and Pistol Petes for trout. We had no other reports.

Gila River — Stream flow on Monday morning was 553 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond — Fishing was good using PowerBait for trout.

Lake Roberts — Fishing was good using PowerBait, Zeke’s trout bait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Percha Dam — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Quemado Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Grande — Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 0.00 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Snow Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Southeast

Alto Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bataan Lake — Fishing was fair using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Black River — Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 11 cfs. Fishing was fair using worms and PowerBait for trout.

Blue Hole Park Pond — Fishing was good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.

Bonito Lake — Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage.

Bosque Redondo Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bottomless Lakes — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Brantley Lake — Anglers are required to catch and release all fish here as high levels of pesticides have been found in some fish. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake — Fishing was fair to good using spinners, PowerBait, salmon eggs and worms for trout. We had no other reports.

Chaparral Park Lake — Fishing was good using worms, salmon eggs and small spoons for trout.

El Rito Creek — Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and meal worms for trout. We had no other reports.

Eunice Lake — Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and marshmallows for trout.

Green Meadow Lake — Fishing was very good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and worms for trout.

Greene Acres Lake — Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and homemade dough bait for trout.

Grindstone Reservoir — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jal Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.

Lake Van — Fishing was fair using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Oasis Park Lake — Fishing for trout was fair to good using marshmallows and assorted colors of PowerBait.

Pecos River — Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 21 cfs. Trout fishing was fair using PowerBait, worms and salmon eggs. We had no other reports.

Perch Lake — Fishing was good using homemade dough bait, garlic scented PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.

Ruidoso River — Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 3.2 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Rosa Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Sumner Lake — Fishing was fair using jigs and jig and grub combinations for walleye and an occasional crappie. We had no other reports.
