ENMU basketball capsule - Feb. 9

Texas Woman’s at ENMU

6 p.m., Greyhound Arena

On the air: KSEL 105.9 FM

Records: Texas Woman’s 14-8, 7-7. ENMU 17-5, 13-2.

Last time out: The Greyhounds survived Western New Mexico 76-71 Tuesday night, after losing most of a 15-point lead with 6:31 to go.

Last meeting: Jan. 7, 60-49 ENMU.

Notes: The Greyhounds, up a half-game on Angelo State for first place in LSC play, are looking to build on their school-record 13 LSC wins. This current ENMU team has a larger conference schedule than the previous record-holder, the 1992-93 squad that finished 12-2 and won the LSC title. The Pioneers are middle-of-the-pack in the Lone Star, seventh in scoring offense (66.2 points per game) and fourth in scoring defense (64.8). The Greyhounds are fifth and third in those categories, respectively (70.5 points for, 64.5 points against). Kenesha Saygo leads the Pioneers at 17.9 points per game and is second with 5.2 rebounds per game. Saygo is second in the LSC in scoring behind Jordan Gutierrez of Western New Mexico (18.1). The Pioneers’ only other double-figure scorer is Emily Spector at 10.1 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. The Greyhounds only have two of the LSC’s top 30 scorers — Kassandra Harris (11.6, 17th) and Mikaehla Connor (10.7, 23rd).

Playoff outlook: ENMU has already clinched one of the LSC’s eight postseason tournament slots, and can do no worse than sixth. The Greyhounds need a combination of six wins or Angelo State losses to clinch the top seed outright. The Pioneers need three wins in their final six games to cilnch at least the eighth seed ahead of Texas-Permian Basin and Midwestern State (both 3-11). None of the 11 LSC teams are eliminated yet, but 0-15 Western New Mexico will be with its next loss or Texas A&M-Kingsville’s next win.

Technically a concern: Three Greyhounds are now one technical foul away from a conference suspension, after the team picked up four Tuesday night. Shelby Jones, Dasia Johnson, Jasmine Hotchkins and Eliza Martinez were whistled for the technical fouls. It is the first technical in LSC play for Jones and Johnson, and the second for Hotchkins and Martinez. The LSC tracks technical fouls picked up in conference regular season and tournament games. Players receive a written warning for a second technical, a one-game suspension for a third, a two-game suspension for a fourth and a season-ending suspension for a fifth. Other Greyhounds with technical fouls in LSC play include Harris (2) and Daeshi McCants (1). The team has 11 technical fouls this season, with nine in LSC play — McCants and Mikaehla Connor each picked up one in a non-conference game.
