Portales coasts past Ruidoso

RUIDOSO — The Portales boys basketball team finished a Friday night varsity District 4-4A sweep of Ruidoso with a 61-40 victory.

The win moves the Rams to 5-1 in district play, 19-3 overall, while the warriors fell to 2-4, 11-12 overall. The win for the Rams moves them one step closer to a rematch for first place in the district with Hope Christian.

Portales (19-3, 5-1 district) was led by Jeremie Karngbaye with 20 points, while Junior Ramirez added 16 and Braden Bridges scored 10. Ruidoso got 10 points from Loren Mendez.

Each team had seven 3-pointers. Still, Portales outscored the Warriors (11-12, 2-4) 17-7 in the third quarter to break open a tight game.

Portales hosts New Mexico Military on Tuesday before visiting first-place Hope Christian on Friday.

Portales 58, Ruidoso 15 (girls) — Zamorye Cox and Taylee Rippee outscored the Lady Warriors with 17 points each forPHS (14-8, 3-2 district).

Ruidoso was led by Lia Mosher with nine points.

A 23-9 Portales domination of the second period put things out of reach for the Lady Warriors (4-20, 0-5). It only got worse from there, with Portales scoring continually while Ruidoso struggled to connect on anything.

The Lady Rams will now play their final game of the regular season on Tuesday, traveling to Albuquerque for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff against Hope Christian.
